What is Brick Breaker?
Brick Breaker (also known as Breakout or Arkanoid) is a classic arcade game where you control a paddle at the bottom of the screen and bounce a ball to smash bricks at the top. Clear every brick to advance to the next level — but if the ball falls past your paddle, you lose a life.
Originally designed by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell in 1976, Breakout inspired countless variants and remains one of the most influential arcade games ever made. This is a free, modern HTML5 version that plays smoothly in any browser.
How to Play
- Move the paddle: Slide your mouse or finger left and right. You can also use the arrow keys or A and D.
- Launch the ball: Click the canvas, tap, or press Space to send the ball up.
- Smash bricks: Bounce the ball off the paddle into the bricks. Each brick destroyed scores points based on its color.
- Stay alive: Don't let the ball fall below the paddle — you only have three lives per game.
- Clear the level: Destroy every brick to advance. Each new level is faster than the last.
Scoring
Bricks score more points the higher up they sit. Top-row red bricks are worth 50 points each, and points decrease by 10 per row down to the blue bricks at the bottom.
Tips & Strategy
- Hit the paddle's edges: The angle of the bounce depends on where the ball strikes the paddle. Edge hits send the ball at sharp angles — useful for reaching distant bricks.
- Punch a tunnel: Try to break a vertical column on one side. Once the ball gets above the bricks, it can clear a whole row in seconds.
- Stay calm at high speed: The ball speeds up as you break bricks and as you progress through levels. Anticipate, don't chase.
- Center the paddle to launch: Don't panic if the ball comes back too quickly — the launch direction is slightly randomized, so vary your starting position.
