What is 2048?

2048 is a single-player sliding puzzle game created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in 2014. The objective is simple but addictive: slide numbered tiles on a 4×4 grid, combining tiles with the same number to create a tile valued at 2048.

Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the chosen direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into a single tile whose value is the sum of the two. After every move, a new tile (either 2 or 4) appears in a random empty spot.

How to Play

  1. Slide: Use arrow keys, WASD, or swipe on mobile to slide all tiles in one direction.
  2. Merge: When two tiles of the same value touch, they combine into one tile of double the value.
  3. Score: Each merge adds the new tile's value to your score.
  4. Win: Create a tile worth 2048 — then keep playing for an even higher score!
  5. Lose: The game ends when the board is full and no merges are possible.

Tips & Strategy

  • Pick a corner: Keep your highest tile pinned in one corner (typically bottom-right or bottom-left) and never move it away.
  • Build a chain: Arrange tiles in descending order along a row or column from your anchor corner.
  • Avoid the up move: If you're anchoring the bottom row, only use Up as a last resort — it can break your structure.
  • Plan ahead: Look two or three moves ahead before committing, especially as the board fills up.
  • Use Undo wisely: If a move accidentally disrupts your structure, undo it and try a different direction.

Why 2048 is so addictive

2048 hits the sweet spot of simple rules with deep strategy. The randomness keeps every game fresh, while the merging mechanic gives you a steady stream of small wins. Reaching 2048 for the first time feels great — and once you have, you'll keep playing to chase 4096, 8192, and beyond.
