It estimates the period the style belongs to, which is not always the construction date. A 2005 house built in Colonial Revival style reads as Colonial Revival. The analysis flags revival and reproduction cues where visible (modern materials, suspiciously crisp details), but a photo cannot replace deed records for the actual year.
Strong on buildings with clear stylistic identity, less certain on vernacular buildings, heavy renovations, and mixed styles, which describe a lot of real-world housing stock. In those cases you get the dominant influences rather than one clean label. A straight-on photo showing the full facade in daylight gives the best result.
